Urban design and public realm strategy

Urban Initiatives was commissioned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to prepare a strategy for Woolwich town centre. Our early analysis and public engagement revealed a town of two halves; the run-down, historic town centre and the glamorous new riverfront regeneration area at the Royal Arsenal. The imminent arrival of the Elizabeth Line promised an improved access to the town. The plan aimed to capitalise on this to improve opportunity for all of Woolwich’s residents and businesses.

Our strategy sought to bring together the two parts of the town into one successful place, where everyone would feel welcome. This meant identifying sites for regeneration and public realm enhancement that would transform the image and vitality of the place, revitalise the centre and celebrate its unique history.

Our vision and strategy was prepared collaboratively with local stakeholders and the Council through a series of town workshops. Subsequently, Urban Initiatives prepared an urban design statement supporting a planning application for 500 homes as part of a co-living hub on the former Woolwich Polytechnic site in the heart of the centre.
