Masterplan and Capacity Study
The London Borough of Hounslow commissioned Urban Initiatives to create a masterplan to revitalise the Golden Mile, a key commercial corridor along the A4 and M4 between Brentford and Chiswick. This historically significant yet underperforming business district and traffic-dominated area, faced physical fragmentation and was challenged by poor public transport accessibility. Through a coordinated, forward-thinking approach, the masterplan reimagines the Golden Mile as a thriving 21st-century business hub, balancing economic ambition with heritage sensitivity.
Urban Initiatives worked in close collaboration with the Council, landowners, and key stakeholders to unlock the area’s full potential. The strategy focused on enhancing connectivity, improving infrastructure, and creating a sustainable, high-quality urban environment that attracts investment and fosters long-term economic resilience. A crucial aspect was the careful assessment of building heights and heritage impacts, ensuring that new developments respect the setting of Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The masterplan has already influenced major development projects, particularly north of Kew Bridge, and shaped landmark initiatives such as Brentford’s Community Stadium. By establishing a clear framework for sustainable growth, the Golden Mile is set to reclaim its status as a leading commercial district—driving economic activity, innovation, and regeneration in Hounslow and beyond.
