Character Study and Design Guide
Our characterisation study for the Royal Borough of Greenwich provides a bespoke approach to character led intensification, in the context of the requirements of the New London Plan. It sub-divides the borough into typological areas based on open space and building typologies and for each area, assesses the level of coherence and sensitivity to development. This underpins the study’s recommendations on a character-led approach to intensification.
The typological areas are also used as a unit area to assess residential density and building context height which helps to provide the definition of a tall building in different parts of the borough. Views testing using the VuCity model were also carried out to assess both the individual and cumulative impact of tall buildings and to assist in identifying potential locations and heights of tall buildings.
Following completion of the characterisation and tall buildings study we were appointed to prepare an Urban Design Guide. This establishes high level intensification strategies including comprehensive redevelopment, block consolidation, infill development, adaptation and extension and provides more general guidance on all aspects of built form for new development.
The characterisation, and tall buildings study provides evidence to support the Local Plan and the Urban Design Guide has been adopted as SPD.
