Urban Initiatives laid the groundwork for the regeneration of the historic heart of Salford. Our plans for Salford Central have now come to fruition bringing new life and activity to a part of the city that had fallen into decline.

The area is home to some of Salford’s finest buildings including Salford Cathedral, St Philip’s Church and the former Town Hall. Our vision, prepared collaboratively with the public and private sector and with numerous local stakeholders, aimed to comprehensively regenerate this important part of the City of Salford to help diversify its economic base, bring in new activity and provide a fitting setting for these heritage assets.

Initially we prepared a masterplan that established a clear spatial structure for the area, and translated this into detailed development guidance that was adopted by the city. We then supported our client, Muse Developments, to prepare the largest planning application in the city’s history. Delivery of the plans required compulsory purchase of sites and we supported our client through the CPO Inquiry.

Delivering the plans has been phased over the last decade and includes new high quality offices, hotels and residential buildings. Along with a transformation of the public realm on Chapel Street, the railway station and a new pedestrian bridge that connects the area across the River Irwell to Spinningfields.
